How to Prepare for a Pantry Visit

Getting food support should be simple and stress-free. Here are a few ways to make the most of your visit:

Before You Go

  • Check the date and time: Many pantries have limited hours. Arrive early if possible since supplies can run out.

  • Call or check online: Some sites require registration or appointments (especially drive-thru distributions).

  • Bring identification: Most pantries ask for a photo ID and proof of address to confirm county eligibility.

  • Pack reusable bags or boxes: Not all pantries provide them.

  • Plan for perishables: Bring a cooler or insulated bag if you expect frozen or refrigerated items.

If You’re Bringing Children

  • Choose family-friendly times: Some locations have Saturday or afternoon options that fit better with school schedules.

  • Use drive-thru distributions when possible: Quick and convenient if you have little ones.

  • Bring snacks or small activities: Wait times can vary, and this helps keep kids comfortable.

  • Talk about what you’re doing: Visiting a pantry is an act of strength and care for your family. Let children know that asking for help is okay — and that many families use these same community resources.

When You Arrive

  • Be kind and patient with volunteers: They’re working hard to serve many families.

  • Follow directions for drive-thru sites: Pay attention to traffic flow or line instructions.

  • Ask about other supports: Many pantries also help with diapers, hygiene items, rent, and utility assistance.
